History of our Organisation

In 2004 the Cessnock Uni. Clinic was established as a joint initiative of the University of Newcastle and Hunter Health. At that time there was a critical shortage of general practitioners in the Cessnock region, an area of socio-economic disadvantage with a high burden of disease. The clinic was established to improve access to general practice care for the local population, to facilitate research in primary health care and to support the training of health professionals. The Cessnock Uni. Clinic was established in premises on the Cessnock District Hospital campus.

By 2009 the clinic was operating well and financially viable, with established GP workforce, support staffing and practice population. The University and Hunter Health made the decision that the Community Healthcare Trust could continue to operate the clinic without their oversight as a stand alone not-for-profit company. The clinic commenced trading as Community Healthcare (CHC).

In 2015 CHC established a second clinic in Kurri Kurri with the assistance of funding, a purpose built facility with a co-located pathology collection centre. It was established with the assistance of funding from the Australian Government. In August 2021 the Cessnock clinic moved to a new purpose built facility with co-located pathology collection and pharmacy services, in Vincent St Cessnock. At the same time, the Cessnock Community Healthcare Trust commenced trading as All Ways Healthcare. The move of the Cessnock clinic move marks the end of a successful 16 year partnership with the Local Health District to improve access to general practice care in the Cessnock region. This has been achieved not only through the operation of All Ways Healthcare clinics, but through the training of GP registrars and overseas trained doctors to achieve specialist qualifications.
